The Rocky Mountain Children’s Law Center was founded in 1981 to address the lack of quality legal representation for abused and neglected children in Colorado. Without effective legal advocacy, these children were drifting in foster care for years on end, not receiving the physical and mental health care they needed, and often subjected to dangerous living conditions.
We are appointed by the court to protect the best interests of our child clients, most of whom have been removed from abusive homes. We go beyond typical legal advocacy to guarantee our child clients’ lives are safe and stable by ensuring they are not in state care for more than a year, unnecessarily moved from one home to another, separated from their siblings, denied crucial mental health treatment or forced out of the system without anyone to rely on as they transitioned to adulthood.
In its 29 years, the Children’s Law Center has:
• Saved the lives of 9,526 children
• Provided resources to more than 29,743 crisis callers
• Recruited 1,030 volunteer attorneys to advocate for children
• Achieved dramatic systemic reform through four dozen public policy initiatives
• Trained and empowered 3,840 foster parents to advocate for their foster children
