Anna, Beth, & Caitlyn
Kerri took her clients Anna-10, Beth-7, and Caitlyn-6 to a Rockies game on a very crisp Colorado day early in the Rockies season. The three little girls were so excited. It had been a very chaotic few months. They recently moved to their grandma’s house because their mom was an abusive alcoholic.
After a few innings Kerri gently asked Anna “how she was doing at Grandma’s house?” and if “she understood why they had to live there?” For the first time, Anna opened up about how she was feeling during this really hard time in her and her sisters’ lives. Kerri and Anna had a heart to heart as the innings passed. They talked about how their mom was trying very hard to get better so that they could go home, but that might take a long time.
As they talked a man in front of them overheard Anna and Kerri talking and turned around to ask if all of the girls would like a hot chocolate. Kerri politely declined and thanked him for his offer. The Rockies fan insisted. He and his young son brought back hot chocolates for everyone and as he handed Kerri her drink he quietly said “thank you for everything you do.”
Conversations like this don’t happen in an office and they don’t come easily. It is difficult for maltreated children to open up about the trauma that they have endured at the hands of their parents. Our attorneys spend countless hours with their clients both in and out of the courtroom building a relationship which is critically necessary to advocate for a child.
Because of donations from the Colorado Rockies and Chick-fil-A our staff can to take their clients to a ballgame and out to lunch as engaging ways for children to talk about their struggles. With this support we can lessen the trauma of foster care and learn what is best for our child clients.
